Need a Simple Routine?

Let’s get some thing straight. I am a hot mess. An organized hot mess, but still a mess. To put this into perspective, Tyler just texted me and asked a very simple question.What are we doing for supper? My response was,  I have no idea. I set some cauliflower out?

I think this pretty well sums up how a lot of us manage our nights on a continuous basis. Did we plan and prepare to have a good meal to be full and satisfied? Did we set out an outfit so there’s no early morning panic of, what am I wearing today?

If you are like me today then the answer would be no. I didn’t plan for supper, therefore we’re having sandwiches. I did not plan my outfit and now I have a huge pile of clothes to clean up on my bed. See where I’m going with the action/consequences thing?                        I don’t like having to throw together a sandwich for dinner because I want something with a lot of protein and something that actually tastes good. Also, cooking is so comforting.       I also don’t like to wait until the last minute to throw together an outfit because if you look great, you feel great. But, let’s face it. We are all human and sometimes It is good for you to throw the routine out of the window to relax or have fun. Just make sure you are comfortable enough with your routine that you don’t mind getting back into the swing of things.

So, let’s dig in, shall we?


My (most nights) Nightly Routine

6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m

Getting Home From Work

This portion of the evening is crucial. You are tired, hangry, and generally just needing to 

be left the hell alone. You should have a cheese stick and say push forward because you know your tomorrow will be great with a little prep today.

  1. Say hello to your spouse. You have no idea how much this will brighten your(and their) day. Plus, husbands are kinda like puppies. They’re adorable and they really miss you when you’re gone so it’s best to love on them when you can.
  2. Start supper. If you like to use the slow cooker, you just knocked some cooking and cleaning out of the equation. If not, here are some awesome 30 minute meals. Also, have a glass of wine while you cook. It’s a crucial step.
  3. Light cleaning. I’m talking the tables with all the things on them, doing the dishes, starting a load of laundry. These things that don’t take a lot of time but for some reason become so overwhelming if left unattended.
  4. Have dinner with your family. Seriously do not skip this one. It’s more crucial than the wine mentioned above.

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

This is a good time to read some of that book you love, catch an episode of your favorite show, or just have some quiet time. However, be careful of where you put your relaxation time because we aren’t done prepping for a successful next day…

  1. Shower. It is absolutely essential that I shower as early as possible because I have enough hair for about three people and a small child. This means that I’m either needing more time to air dry before I blow dry or I just need some extra, extra time to blow dry all the way. The struggle is real y’all.
  2. Plan that killer outfit. Have it hung up with your shoes and accessories ready to go.
  3. Pack a lunch and snacks for the next day. Pack all the protein so you can drive by the do-nut shop without an internal battle of willpower. This is especially important if you have class until 9:30 p.m three nights a week.
  4. Study. I try to plan at least one hour to study. luckily, I have down time before my night classes to catch up on homework so I don’t have to devote as much time when I get home. Hubby appreciates this.
  5. Relax. That’s it on this one. Give yourself some time and enjoy being with your family.

My goal is to be in bed at 10:30 p.m. finishing a chapter in my book. This is what I’ve found to be a perfect ending to my day.

That’s it! This is the basic routine I follow. It allows me to have a little structure but still be flexible to achieve what I need to for the next day. It’s not complicated, but everything gets accomplished and that’s the goal here.

Sleep Is Key

This will not be the last time I say this but, there are just not enough hours in the day. We have so many goals to reach and quotas to meet that we end up letting some things go. In my case, it was sleep.

The couple of months we have been in 2017 I have continuously slept less than 5 hours or had a couple of all-nighters a week. You can’t take the next step at work without the effort and those A’s aren’t going to make themselves, amiright? and what about the dishes, the laundry, the meal planning….

So, needless to say this was a very vicious cycle of no sleep, exhaustion, and over caffeination. Is caffeination a word? Not sure, but let’s just roll with it…

This cycle eventually ended with a really grouchy version of myself (I swear she doesn’t make an appearance that often) sitting at my kitchen table studying/reading leadership material and basically in tears until my husband said, “Chy, go to bed.” I (oddly enough) didn’t argue with him even though this was only at 8:30ish p.m. I mean, who goes to bed at 8:30 p.m.? Blessed people with an awesome husband. That’s who.

The next morning I felt great and seriously rocked that day of work and school. Absolutely shocking what a full night of sleep can do. The only problem was I fell back into my old habits quickly. By quickly I mean the next night I had a monster at 9:30 p.m. and went to bed at 4 a.m…My mother would call this being a glutton for punishment.

So, resourceful as I am, I searched the web for ways to go from being a night owl to a morning bird. The thing I read over and over was, put your phone away. After some reflection I could see how this could solve about 80 of my 99 problems with having a normal sleep schedule. So, I started putting my phone across the room with my alarm set as loud as possible. This was great because I wasn’t checking Pinterest, I wasn’t playing domino’s (don’t judge my old lady indulgences) and I definitely was not reading blogs and articles on how to make myself a better wife, home maker, student, or employee. I am positive y’all know the feeling of anxiety that can cause. This is a terrible idea right before bed. Again, glutton for punishment. My Momma is a smart lady.

Lo and behold, I fell asleep much faster after forcing myself to lay down at 10:30 p.m. and felt great the next morning

This started a sleep-fueled obsession to find more ways to sleep deeper and without anxiety right before I fall asleep. Luckily, Amazon has everything I need and Prime makes it that much easier/cheaper to get it right away. So, after reading this blog regarding essential oils, I found this diffuser and this small set of oils that would allow me to try this trend out. After the first night of turning the diffuser color to red (I’m not sure why that was the most soothing color. Maybe because it was darkest?) and trying the blend of 3 drops lavender/3 drops wild orange, I was out. Now, listen y’all. When I say out, I mean my eyes were heavy in about 10 minutes and I was drooling in 15. I’m now using this mixture every night and make sure I’m in bed around 10:30 p.m. This has allowed me to add an extra 30 minutes to my morning comfortably and make my day that much more productive.

I recommend giving these two things a try and seeing how you feel. Another major item is organization. It was SO important that I find a routine so I could manage my 10:30 p.m. bed time and all of my other tasks/goals for the day. I’ll go over my routine and how I developed it in my next post.
